About The iPlant Collaborative

Data Set Hosting

The iPlant Collaborative hosts data sets from research organizations and individuals for public use by the plant sciences community and for use within the iPlant Collaborative cyberinfrastructure.  Data depositors must have the ownership, authority, and/or permission for any data submitted to iPlant.  Any derived data must properly attribute primary sources and authors before being uploaded to iPlant.

Types of data sets iPlant will host for public access:

  • Canonical or reference data
  • Experimental data
  • Simulation and model data
  • Observational data
  • Derived data

The validity and authenticity of data sets, including metadata, is the sole responsibility of the data depositor, and the iPlant Collaborative does not inherently make any guarantees on the quality of any data submitted for hosting.  Data depositors can contact iPlant Support (support@iplantcollaborative.org) regarding any new versions or updates to a data set.

iPlant will provide public access to data sets through various mechanisms, primarily through iRODS, but access may also be available through the iPlant Collaborative Discovery Environment, Cloud Services, Data Store, web services, and other iPlant web portals and tools.  Data depositors who desire restricted access to or confidentiality of their data set(s) should contact iPlant Support prior to uploading their data set(s).  Public access to these data sets may require users to create and authenticate using iPlant credentials.

The iPlant Collaborative encourages all data depositors to provide detailed documentation and descriptions to accompany their data sets, including file format and schema information (if applicable).   iPlant may request additional documentation or provenance.
