Using the iPlant Logo
The iPlant Collaborative logo should be used by itself to signal that the iPlant Collaborative is of, for, and by the community. It should not appear with a university or department logo (e.g. CSHL, Bio5 Institute, etc.).
When iPlant sponsors a seminar or event in conjunction with another organization, it is appropriate to omit the logo and just include the iPlant Collaborative name in text within the seminar announcement.
The iPlant Collaborative logo must always appear with the trademark (TM) symbol.
History of the Logo
iPlant is about understanding the fundamental biology of plants by asking the really big questions ("Grand Challenges") in the plant sciences AND having the tools to answer them. The Collaborative's original logo was based on a plant whorl, an icon of modern plant biology, and recognizable to everyone in the field.
iPlant's original logo
It was intended to have a three-fold meaning:
- Plant Biology - whorls of a flower, symbolizing integration of developmental biology and genetics;
- Community - concentric circles representing the communities we interact with, from near to far, e.g., Grand Challenge teams to the broader scientific and computing community, to the educational community, to the public; and
- Computing Sciences (and/or Electronic Communication) - the whorl suggests a radio or wifi signal, information radiating outwards, enabling people to communicate over distances.
iPlant's new logo, the "teal whorl", was professionally designed to build upon these meanings and to provide brand recognition and a visual association for the collaborative community. Our logo is available to all who would like to have an association with the iPlant Collaborative via a logo-ized product.
