“We can make a real difference.” Alice Muchugi, Genetic Resources Unit Manager at the World Agroforestry Center, watched as the African Orphan Crops Consortium (AOCC) and African Plant Breeder's Academy graduated its first class of 23 plant breeders last week. The scientists are trained in techniques to create improved planting materials for African smallholder farmers. The AOCC are partners of the iPlant Collaborative.

A massive genome analysis project has sequenced the genomes of 48 bird and 3 crocodile species, opening new doors to understanding the evolution of dinosaurs’ living descendants. The capacity to compare and analyze all 51 genomes was made possible by CoGe, a platform powered by the iPlant Collaborative at the University of Arizona.

It can be hard believing that Rottweilers and Chihuahuas are the same species. Still, most of us know that a dog is a dog - even in the face of apparent phenotypic evidence to the contrary. But did you know that broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, cauliflower, kohlrabi, cabbage - these plants also are the same species? iPlant collaborator J. Chris Pires, an associate professor and member of the Interdisciplinary Plant Group at the University of Missouri, studies genetic variation of Brassica oleracea, a species whose members he calls the "dogs of the plant world." Much of his genomic analyses are run through CoGe, a comparative genomics platform hosted on iPlant cyberinfrastructure.
