Position Summary:  

The iPlant Collaborative is a cyberinfrastructure collaborative that is working to address grand challenges identified by the plant sciences community. It brings together plant biologists, computer and information scientists and   engineers, as well as experts from other disciplines, all working in integrated teams.

We are seeking a talented application programmer to join our Core Infrastructure team, where you will work with other software developers, computer scientists, and project managers to develop rich Internet applications for the
plant sciences community. This position will work with top developers from participating institutions, developing innovative, open source applications for the community. We seek motivated developers with a proven record in team
environments, experience with agile development methodologies, attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and who take pride in their work.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop rich Internet applications for the plant sciences community to help address scientific grand challenges.
  • Implement software according to the project requirements, specifications and timelines.
  • Work within established development standards and methodologies, including agile development, pair programming, and test- and behavior-driven development.
  • Work with team of developers to evaluate current and new development technologies, such as programming languages, application platforms, and libraries.
  • Work with other developers to document and promote best practices and patterns.  
Additional Minimum Qualifications: 
  • Associate's degree in Computer Science or related field AND three years of systems/programming experience; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field AND two years of systems/programming experience; OR
  • Four years of systems and/or programming experience, OR
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS degree in Computer Science or related field AND two years of systems/programming experience.
  • Background with scripting languages, such as PHP, Perl, Python or Ruby.
  • Experience with relational databases (especially MySQL and Oracle), and object/relational mapping systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce robust software, preferably in the scientific computing domain.
  • Experience with and understanding of agile development methodologies.
  • Understanding of common enterprise application architectural patterns, such as MVC.
  • Familiarity with Unix and Apache.
  • Experience with a modern web application frameworks, such as Zend Framework, Ruby on Rails, Django, etc.
  • Experience with a version control system such as Subversion, CVS or Git.
  • Understanding of developing rich Internet applications, either in AJAX (MooTools experience preferred) or Adobe Flex.
  • Experience working in a team environment on successful software projects.
