Position Summary:
The iPlant Collaborative is a cyberinfrastructure collaborative that is working to address grand challenges identified by the plant sciences community. It brings together plant biologists, computer and information scientists and engineers, as well as experts from other disciplines, all working in integrated teams.
We are seeking a talented database administrator to join our Core Infrastructure team, where you will work with software developers, computer scientists, and project managers to develop rich Internet applications for the plant sciences community. This position will support the relational database infrastructure for the iPlant project, and support a team of top developers from participating institutions. We seek a motivated database administrator with a proven record in team environments, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design and implement a high-performance, high-availability database infrastructure for custom developed application.
- Configure and optimize database hardware and software along with the system administrator.
- Ensure the proper archival and availability of data.
- Develop, implement and document data naming and organizational conventions.
- Advise programming and systems staff in the optimization of queries and application performance.
- Advise programming staff in proper relational database design techniques.
- Evaluate current and new database technologies, and make recommendations for adopting new technologies.
- Document and promote best practices and processes.
- Thorough understanding of fundamental relational database theory, including how to refactor database designs into various normal forms.
- Direct experience administering an Oracle database.
Preferred Qualifications:
- MS degree in Computer Science or related field AND two years of systems/programming experience.
- Experience with MySQL and PostgreSQL.
- Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
- Familiarity with scripting languages, such as Perl, PHP, Python or Ruby.
